As an opera singer, it's very evident that her problems in this performance don't have to do with a faulty technique. She sounds sick and that makes it very difficult to access the upper and even middle registers (she starts to crack in her upper chest voice/middle). But CZJ has a very good technical foundation vocally imo. Good vibrato action and clear vowels and not nasal at all unlike so many broadway and opera singers today. I really enjoy her performances

I love her, but this was not a great performance of this song. I actually liked her voice in it, sick as she was. But it was the acting and emoting that felt overacted, like most of her movies. The movie Chicago is her triumph.

Fun fact, Angela Lansbury was supposed to perform liaisons instead but got super ill so Catherine last minute had to step in and sing without rehearsal. She had no idea where the cameras were, that’s why she’s abruptly moving her head around she’s trying to find them

I think she did a good job. Is she Judy Dench? Absolutely not but very few are. People forget context. Desiree Armfeldt is a second rate actress. Her mother, a retired courtesan (professional mistress for the wealth and privilege/ high class prostitute) thinks she is an idiot for trying to make a career out of it as she is not very good at acting and acting in this time period was not a noble profession and paid horribly. In her mother's mind she is wasting away her body and looks and it's too late. Glynis Johns who originated the role was a wonderful actress but not a wonderful singer. Sondheim wanted (had to) give her something to sing so he created this number for her. It just so happens that people are so accustom to the Barbra cover or other powerful singers singing it that they expect more when in reality conceptually it requires less. So, much so that Sondheim had to help Barbra rework it for her vocals. It's a very similar situation to the role of Sally Bowles in Cabaret. The role is not written for a singer. Sally is supposed to be a mediocre singer/ actress BUT she is such a likable "character" that she works. People are just used to triple threat Liza's version of the character which is also a VERY different version of the script in general. So, when you see an actress play Sally and they aren't belting out and being amazing it isn't because they are a bad actress/ singer. It is because they are being directed not to.

Her head movements is distracting tbh. Vocally and emotionally she did a great job. If you saw her on broadway she did a way better job than this. This was an off night for her. People need to stop comparing her to Elizebeth Taylor’s performance. Taylor voice was most likely auto tuned since she’s not a singer, did multiple of takes, and lip sang. Catherine did it live and on stage.

I wish they would have started the scene the right way... With the lines that came before this number. Out of context I can be good, but it is such a powerful piece with some context. Or at least had her scene partner on the bed like it is in the show. Bernadette, who replaced her, was just as spastic, but it made sense with someone sitting on the bed that she was playing against. I can't imagine how hard it is to connect to a song that is meant to be sing to someone... When no one is there.

This is awful. She shouldn't have won an Academy Award and she definitely shouldn't have won a Tony Award. Acting terrible and singing is terrible also. Christiane Noll sucked in her performance as well, but this is much worse.

if this was her acting in the musical itself, that's why she lost. She's stiffer than Frankenstein....one emotion...It's supposed to be a roller coaster ride of emotions.
